WATER BASED SCREEN PRINTING
with Permaset Ink

The use of Permaset waterbased screen printing inks is what makes Newell Graphics a different kind of printing company. Traditionally, shirts are printed with an ink product called Plastisol. This is basically a liquid plastic which stays liquid until it is heated. Once it reaches a certain temperature, it bonds to the fabric. They are fantastic for the printer to work with, since they don't dry in the screen. However, they do contain both PVC and Phalates. Recent studies have shown that these ingredients can be harmful to the environment and our health.

Our water based inks contain no PVC or Phalates. Not only that, they do not contain any heavy metals, formaldehyde, or other harmful materials. Here are some more benefits of Permaset water based inks:

  • Soft feel with almost no hand on light colors
  • Vibrant Colors
  • More durable than PVC inks
  • Breathable
  • Can be ironed
  • Colors resistant to light

What about Discharge?

Water based inks generally are transparent in nature. So printing directly on dark

colors usually doesn't work well. To all the inks to show up on dark colors, many printers use discharge inks. These basically strip the color from the shirt and replace it with water based dyes. The problem with this process is the use of formaldehyde and other harmful chemicals. Not only that, they're unpredictable and can only be used on certain garments. That is why we've opted to not use discharge in our shop. Our health is too important!

Dark Colored Garments

We have recently found a solution for printing on darks that is eco friendly, not harmful to our health, and produces beautiful results! These are high opacity water based inks. Although not as soft as the waterbased inks on light colors, they are much softer in feel than traditional plastisol. We'll post some pictures soon so you can see for yourself.

COLORS AVAILABLE

These are the basic ink colors available. We can mix any other color as well. We ask that you provide a pantone number or send us a sample to match. We will get as close as possible.

* Recycled Black is a unique color made by recycling ink mixed from other jobs that will no longer be used. Instead of sending it to a landfill, we mix it together to create a unique earthy black/brown color. Because of the nature of this ink, color shades will vary from batch to batch. But it's a great 'organic' color with a rich look and feel.

PERMASET INKS

Permaset Aqua is a revolution in water-based fabric and screen printing inks. Made in Australia using advanced polymer technology combined with the purest pigments, Permaset Aqua results in an environmentally friendly and easy to use ink that provides long-term durability without compromising its superior soft handle.

Recent advances in polymer technology have enabled Permaset to manufacture a 100% solvent-free ink with greatly improved print qualities that were previously only attainable with solvent based products. No longer does the user have to suffer with the nasty smells and related health and safety issues that are associated with solvents to produce professional looking results. Permaset Aqua works on almost all fabrics, natural and synthetic, without the need for additives- once the print run is finished, any excess ink can simply be returned to its original container, since it has not been compromised by additives. Permaset Aqua is easily cleaned up with water.

All pigments selected for use in Permaset Aqua needed to meet several criteria, not least of all was that they register nothing less on than 6 on the Blue Wool Scale for lightfastness. To help ensure an almost imperceptible feel on the fabric, all pigments have a particle size of less than 1 micron, making them similar in feel to talcum powder. This in turn means that they need less resin to hold them fast to the fabric, adding to the softness and also allowing the brilliance of the pigment (the part you want to see!) to show through.
